Raise the voice for the rights of Afghan women!

EFA calls the European Union to step up for the protection of women in Afghanistan, after the Taliban regime announces further outraging laws and prohibitions

The rights of Afghan women are at stake. Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of international troops in 2021, the situation of women and girls in the country has been exacerbating more and more. The latest news from the South-Central Asian country was the announcement of the new “Virtue and Vice” law, which aggravates the situation of Afghan women even more. It prohibits them from speaking loudly, reciting poetry, or singing in public.

This new prohibition is added to a scandalous decline of women’s rights in the country, where they are forbidden to receive secondary education, receive compensation for their work, or go out of the house without the surveillance of a man.

EFA energetically condemns the Taliban regime and the decline of women’s rights in Afghanistan. These impositions and restrictions on women’s lives are a clear violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We believe that the international community cannot turn a blind eye to Afghan women and girls anymore. We cannot forget what they are living. Therefore, we call on the EU and the whole international community to act. It’s time to condemn the Taliban regime without nuances or hesitations and to use any available political means at our disposal to protect the rights of women in Afghanistan and secure their well-being.
