War in the Middle East: EFA calls for a ceasefire and the respect of international law
EFA is deeply concerned by the escalation of the war in the Middle East. More than 40.000 people have been killed in Palestine, including many children. Millions of people have been displaced, causing despair and a total lack of hope for their future. Now the situation is extending to Lebanon and other bordering countries, potentially wrecking the lives of many more innocent civilians.
The right to defence can never override established international law, which is essential for the protection of human rights, peace, and security. World leaders, and international organisations including the UN and EU, must act according to their principles and values and strive with all diplomatic means to establish long-lasting peace.
History will judge us for our actions or inactions. We refuse to turn a blind eye to this horrifying situation. EFA calls for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian support to alleviate the present situation, foster dialogue and co-operation, and pave the way to an international Peace Conference to find a fair and just settlement of the conflict. EFA works for the recognition of both States -Israel and Palestine- in a new world order.
The primary right of all Peoples is the right to exist.
