EFA Urges Immediate Action and Accountability Amid Worsening Valencia Flood Crisis

The European Free Alliance is deeply concerned about the delayed and inadequate response from the Generalitat Valenciana, led by President Carlos Mazón, to the devastating floods in the Valencian Country. Over recent days, residents have faced life-threatening conditions, often without basic necessities like water, food, and hygiene supplies. This crisis has only been worsened by the lack of timely action from regional authorities, despite repeated warnings from meteorological services.

Although military personnel and some relief agencies have begun to mobilise, EFA believes these efforts fall far short given the scale of the disaster. Mazón’s administration reportedly underestimated the severity of the storm, delaying crucial warnings and resulting in preventable loss of life. Early warnings and quicker action could have saved lives, but resources were not deployed swiftly enough. To make it worse, reports indicate that offers of aid from other EU countries were refused, limiting the ability to deliver an adequate emergency response.

EFA stresses the need for an immediate and organised response, noting the inspiring solidarity shown by local residents, who have stepped up where the state response has fallen short. Without sufficient support from Mazón’s administration, ordinary people have been travelling long distances, often walking, to help clean up affected areas and distribute essential supplies. An enormous thank you.

With more heavy rain expected, EFA urges the Valencian Government to ensure safe shelter for those still at risk from flooding, material losses, and disease. It’s essential that aid be allowed in without further delay to help those in need. President Mazón must take responsibility for his administration’s slow and insufficient response to this crisis.

A strong, unified, and accountable approach is needed to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence in regional leadership.
