Greens/EFA MEPs call the European Council for stronger economic measures against COVID-19
Greens/EFA Members of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee in the European Parliament sent an open letter to the European Council urging them to take definite action to support all citizens in the European Union ahead EUCO’s meeting. Members of the European Council held a video conference on 26 March to tackle COVID-19 outbreak, among other issues, resulting in the publication of a joint statement.
The letter warns EU Heads of Governments about the dramatic consequences that the outbreak might imply if common and resolute actions are not taken, calling on the European solidarity to not put the European project at risk once again.
Measures proposed include to mandate an EU institution to issue long-term common euro area bonds, by using or increasing the 410 billion EURO available as ESM firepower. Also, heads of state should give green light for additional funding for the European Investment Bank.
